Look-alikes to watch for

These words only look as if they are built from familiar parts.

  • island is not is + land. Old English igland, from ieg (island) + land. The s came later, borrowed from the unrelated word isle.
  • delight is not de + light. From Latin delectare, to charm. The gh was added to match light.
  • perform is not per + form. Its per- is real, but the rest is not form: it comes from an old French word for carry out, respelled to look like form.
  • division is not vis, see. From divide. Its vis has nothing to do with seeing.
  • pediatrician is not ped, foot. From Greek pais, child: a doctor for children.
  • monopoly is not mono + poly, many. Greek polein, to sell: one seller.
  • ferry is not fer, carry. An Old English word, not from Latin fer.
  • hamburger is not ham + burger. Hamburger means from Hamburg, a city in Germany; the ham is part of the city's name.
