Teacher-controlled, AI-assisted oral reading fluency assessment

ReadingFluency.app is a web app for teachers who run oral reading fluency (ORF) assessments. Record a student read or tap-mark it live, let AI draft the miscues and scores, and then play back the audio to confirm, correct, or override any mark before it goes in the record. The teacher always has the final word. Around that core workflow it adds passage generation and PDF import, rosters, live group reading sessions for a whole class, progress monitoring, and reports, with passages in English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin.

Who builds it

ReadingFluency.app is built by an educator, together with educators across Minnesota, California, Canada, and Australia who use it in their own classrooms and shape what gets built next. The changes that come out of those classrooms are documented in the product updates.

What we believe

  • AI assists, teachers decide. AI scoring is a first pass, not a verdict. It is optional, reviewable, and always subject to the teacher's judgment.
  • Evidence you can play back and correct. Every AI-marked read keeps its recording, so a teacher can listen to a specific sentence, fix a mark, and add a note before the result is final.
  • Fast enough for a whole class. Whole-class fluency checks should take minutes, not days, so collection, AI support, and teacher review live in one place and are easy to repeat.

How it started

ReadingFluency.app was first released in early 2020, just before the pandemic began. It was built for a friend, a reading specialist in a Mandarin immersion program. There were plenty of fluency assessments for English and none for Mandarin, so the first version was a simple browser-based tool that needed no login and counted words correct per minute (WCPM) and accuracy automatically. No login also meant the data lived in a single browser, so a teacher who switched devices or browsers lost it. We never promoted it, yet hundreds of teachers found it on their own.

In 2025 it became clear that AI could supercharge that workflow, drafting the miscues and scores from a recording, while leaving the teacher in total control of every mark. The current ReadingFluency.app launched in December 2025, with sign-in so a teacher's records follow them to any device.
